 The rent and maintenance are too high in Santa Monica so this bargain does not exist at the Santa Monica Laemmle which, in its favor, still does have a favorable discount ($13) compared to other entertainment downtown AND does show other selections so as not to be in 'competition' with the Royal, its West LA member in this wonderful art house chain of movie theatres.

$7 for seniors for the 1pm first movie of the day.   And since it is a BBB bus ride away (and near some good alternative restaurants - if one happens to be in that area) I will henceforth and forevermore keep following the Laemmle Royal, next to Blick, for whatever it is showing......and the chances are I will be there once, perhaps twice a week, adding this one to my list of activities in my area....I like this!!!!!

Last week I saw a French romance/comedy:  Jane Austen Ruined My Life.  Yesterday I saw Bad Shabbos.  Both provoked belly laughs.....

And here's one more:  There is a vocal concert - end of semester performance - at the Broad Stage of Santa Monica College on Friday evening at 7:30pm.  I do not think I will encounter any difficulty buying a ticket at the door for myself on Friday......and I look forward to paying the $10 for admission.  I assume that it will be balmy on my walk there from home.....and if it is too cold to walk home after, I'll take the BBB#1.  I assume I will write about this concert after attending......those reading will have to look for this in the future.......

Watching Freddie

 I started early today and while I anticipated a light day, it was 'more involved' than I anticipated.  John Achorn acted his way through chapters 19-22 of Huck Finn.  We discussed the LA Times sponsored Festival of Books at which Percival Everett, author of James, spoke.  For Summer session (8 weeks), we are going to read Raymond Carver short stories.  We were also asked for our input regarding choice of authors for the Fall semester. I got home just as Freddie's class began.  The legions of women watercolor painters who simply adore Freddie Manseau makes his Zoom class quite entertaining.  Freddie is a true character - the extent to which he plays up on this to keep his classes large is open to conjecture but regardless, I am enjoying painting! Deja vu - Spring Street

 Once upon a time I spent a whole lot of time downtown - DTLA.   The was before there was even a section of the city known as DTLA.  In the early 60s, as a student in L.A., I had a part time job for an office equipment leasing company that was located on Spring Street, then, the primary business street of Los Angeles.   I took the E Line to 7th Street and then walked past Grand (and Botega Louie) Avenue to Spring Street.  I passed Clifton's Cafeteria - with that picture showing up on my phone but not the computer - and the jewelry district, getting to what was formerly the legal and financial business centre of LA.  Those buildings are now lofts and some of them look quite interesting for a home conveniently located if one works in that area.  I also passed The Last Book Store - not there when I was there but definitely a place worthy of going back to - best used book store I've seen - in the US!!!
