Tripped

The initial challenge for me yesterday was whether I was 'hungry' enough to want to go out last night to an open mic night at a Santa Monica bar.  I was sufficiently hungry/motivated.  I took the #1 bus to Pico on 4th, got off and crossed the street to catch the #3 bus on  Pico off of 4th, one stop to Lincoln and from there, walked to The Trip.

I did my one and only stand-up gig at the Improv.  That's major league.  The trip?  Lower level Class A - truly near the bottom after starting out at the top.  There were no comics there last night but a whole bunch of singers/musicians.  There were about 15 at The Trip while I was there.  Were those there 'receptive' to a comedian?  I believe so - if there are 4 or 5 musicians who would appear before me - and a whole bunch after.........my position in the order of appearance obviously will make a difference.  

I've started rehearsing and will soon write to replace those portions of my initial script that I want to change.  Let's see what I can do to prepare for a 4 August gig at The Trip.........

7 Baseball

It is late morning on a wet Saturday as the rains - more than a drizzle but not enough for me to consider taking an umbrella with me were I to go out - have been (more or less) steady since early morning, yesterday.  I'm gonna be indoors all day, today - still in my pajamas - no need to go out.......and our small home is pleasantly, comfortably warm - with a thermal vest atop the pj tops as the central heating keeps our place warm. My life is intertwined with baseball tying so much more than the game into it.  Yeah, 'Baseball is Life'.........I wish I still had that T shirt!  I have been on a baseball odyssey from sometime in September, 1944 when my mother and her sisters Sarah and Faye  and 4 cousins attended Ladies Day at Ebbetts Field where the St Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers.   Of course I don't remember it!  But it is what I do remember from 18 September 1947 on - far more than just the Dodgers and World Series matters.  I have h...

Watching Freddie

 I started early today and while I anticipated a light day, it was 'more involved' than I anticipated.  John Achorn acted his way through chapters 19-22 of Huck Finn.  We discussed the LA Times sponsored Festival of Books at which Percival Everett, author of James, spoke.  For Summer session (8 weeks), we are going to read Raymond Carver short stories.  We were also asked for our input regarding choice of authors for the Fall semester. I got home just as Freddie's class began.  The legions of women watercolor painters who simply adore Freddie Manseau makes his Zoom class quite entertaining.  Freddie is a true character - the extent to which he plays up on this to keep his classes large is open to conjecture but regardless, I am enjoying painting!
