For inclusion in y current essay..........
This past Thursday night, taking my mid-work session break as a volunteer at St John's Hospital, I got my coffee and found than instead of reading from my phone, that big, high-def screen was broadcasting the Mexico-Korea World Cup match in the community room adjoining the cafeteria. There were 15-20 staff there, watching.....wow - what a screen to watch football - and right across the street from home.
Friday, the day after, we had lunch with friends (yes, we do have friends!) at St Johns as Team USA was in a game against Australia. We got to the cafeteria a half-hour prior to game start, put our stuff on a table to reserve it, went to the cafeteria to get lunch and came back to our table later, without anxiety because we had peace of mind, where we were, that no one would take our stuff....is there any place else in Santa Monica where we could do this?
After the game and after lunch we went shopping.....and returned for another game at 3pm with a whole bunch doctors, in between surgeries, watching........and I did it one more time for a 5:30pm game..........
This morning I got to the cafeteria for a 9am game only to find several waiting for the someone to turn on the video. I asked - has anyone called someone in hospital management about this? No was the answer. I went downstairs and got Engineering to turn on Netherlands vs Sweden - which they did after Netherland had already scored twice. Fear not, this afternoon(Saturday, 20 June) I watched Germany and Ivory Coast. It was really an exciting game, with Germany coming from behind, mid-way through the second half, scoring the winning goal with a minute left in extra time.
This far I've seen all or part of 6 games.....12 of the 48 teams in this event........but the two most populated countries in this world - India and China........FIFA may have expanded the field in hope of snagging the football teams from these two countries for its big event......alas, one should not expect miracles.........
