My Santa Monica afternoon delight ends on 28 May 2025
First, before I have a senior moment and forget about mentioning it, for a second time, yesterday I confirmed the Wheelhouse shtick: 40% of what?????? ! The base per item price of exactly the same product at another weed shop where that other shop was $2 less than the 40% off base price at Wheelhouse........they're getting you there with 40% off advertising and relying upon people buying without further investigation.....shame on them.........or shame on the buyers for not asking a bit more than blindly accepting just '40%'??
Uncle Arnie is the brand of 100mg concentrate drink at the weed shop located between 14th and 15th Streets on the south side of Wilshire Blvd in Santa Monica. On a sunny afternoon when the winds coming in off the ocean are not too strong and do not reduce the outside temperature with an uncomfortable 'feels like', walking west on Santa Monica Blvd along the sunny side of the street and casually heading north along the way to get to Wilshire, I arrive at the shop, show my ID to check in and go directly to the refrigerator for my $9 bottle of tonic - my elixir of buzz which I shake, open and drink in the side alley by the weed shop before heading diagonally across Wilshire to the northwest corner and the Rite Aid Pharmacy.
Before being consumed by the larger fish in that sea, Rite Aid, that pharmacy chain used to be Thrifty Drug Stores......and yes, there even was a pharmacy and pharmacist inside, along with everything else being sold there that you walked the aisles and looked at with the hook that got you in the store in the first place: ice cream.....the 25 cent cone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I discovered Thrifty and the cone when we moved from Brooklyn in 1959. I seem to recall still being able to get a 25 cent cone from Thrifty when I left life in the States in 1990. I rediscovered Rite Aid and their $2.79 (cone or cup) in October 2023................and what could make an afternoon delight for me more 'complete' than some ice cream after the energizing liquid?
They're closing that Rite Aid on 28 May. I was there yesterday.......of course I'll be there again. All things must pass ......who knows what will survive, in what format, for how long? The Pantry is gone.....Rite Aid will soon disappear making an Uncle Arnie and Rite Aid another fond memory......I think I had best consider dining at Musso & Frank, in Hollywood, a strong part of what was once my LA life, before they close........such is life
